Maintaining Your Transmission
Regardless of how transmissions came to be, maintaining them is of the utmost importance. Here at Enduro Gearbox Centre, we deal with problems like that every day. We repair gearboxes and transmissions of all makes and types but we also advise our customers on how to maintain their transmissions. Let’s face it, getting a new transmission, even a refurbished one, certainly isn’t a cheap venture but regularly maintaining your transmission can save you a lot of trouble in the end, not to mention a bundle. However, there are tell-tale signs that one can hear and see that would indicate a transmission giving trouble and, here at Enduro Gearbox, we would like to share them with you because prevention is better than a cure.
Transmission Leakage
The most obvious sign that your transmission needs a service is leakage. Transmission fluid has a very distinct red translucent colour. If you happen to notice a puddle of red liquid under the car, it’s most likely transmission fluid and it’s time to take your car to a professional. A problematic transmission will burn fluid, charring it to dark brown or even black in extreme cases. If the fluid leakage is accompanied by a burning smell it is definitely time to have that transmission looked at. A burning smell could be a sign of a transmission overheating or its leaking fluid into the exhaust. This is a problem that needs to be looked at as soon as possible. Apart from additives, transmission fluid is essentially refined petrol and if it drips onto a hot exhaust it could catch on fire. Today, most cars have very sophisticated computer systems that can detect even the most minor transmission slip. A *Check Engine* or a blinking *overdrive* light can indicate a transmission problem that needs to be addressed immediately.
Transmission Slippage
Sometimes, especially driving at highway speeds, you may experience a shuddering or a bucking sensation. It may simply be an engine tune-up issue but it could also be a transmission problem. Also, while driving, you may experience sudden jerks. This could indicate that your transmission is inadvertently slipping between gears. Transmission slippage is one of the best ways to tell whether a transmission is in need of urgent repair. Also, when you try to engage a gear and your transmission takes longer than normal to engage may also indicate severe transmission problems. Hesitation on acceleration is also a tell-tale sign that your transmission is in need of a service. A functioning transmission should operate noiselessly. Hearing grinding or whining noises while shifting gears or not being able to shift into certain gears also indicates a serious transmission problem. Transmissions also have a tendency to run hot, especially if the fluid levels are low. Overheating is a definite sign to take your car in for transmission repairs.
